INTERCEPTOR™ Optical Network Security System For Dark Fiber Monitoring
INTERCEPTOR™ Optical Network Security System incorporates patented technology to monitor dark fibers in optical networks for physical intrusion into the cable or cable pathway and to ensure the availability of the network. A single INTERCEPTOR port can provide protection for an entire continuous cable-run. The monitored fibers are looped back at the far end of the cable-run to return the monitoring signal to the INTERCEPTOR.

What is Dark Fiber Monitoring?
Dark Fiber refers to "unlit" fiber in a cable, or fiber that is unused; perhaps dedicated for future growth or as spares in case of fiber damage. When unused fibers are present in a cable, it can be economically beneficial and technically viable to monitor a few of those fibers rather than the active fibers. If ingress into the cable or cable pathway is attempted, the protected dark fibers will sense the disturbance and issue an alarm. The effectiveness of this is dependent upon the design of the optical cable itself. Some cable designs require monitoring on more dark fibers than others.
When To Monitor Dark Fibers
• When spare fibers are available in the cable and it is unlikely that they will ever be made active
• When economic factors are important (to minimize cost)
• When it is not required that the data path be interrupted when an intrusion event is detected
• When the threat level affords that not every active fiber in the cable be monitored
